Farmers market in Coimbatore- A success story

Farmers Market, popularly known as Uzhavar Sandhai in Tamil is doing very well in Coimbatore region.

Farmers Market is a government initiative and in this scheme farmers sell their produce directly to the customers without any middlemen. It is a big success in Coimbatore.

In the year 1999 DMK government introduced the scheme in tamilnadu and now there are 141 such markets in the state. In this scheme the state government provides land and building for the market and Agricultural Department involves with the selection of the eligible farmers, issuing id cards to them, fixing price for their produce and overall maintanence of the market. Selected farmers are allowed to sell their produce at their allotted space directly to the customers. They dont have to pay any rent or commission for their bussiness.

Brinjal,Tomato, Onion,Ladies finger,Greens,Potato,Drumstick,Carot,Beetroot,Radish,Cauliflower,Cocount are selling like hot cakes.

I recently visited the Singanallur Farmers Market at one Sunday morning around 7am.There is good crowd at the early morning.Farmers are busy with their customers. Now they are understanding the customers likes and dislikes. Rates are little less when compare to the open market. Vegatables are fresh because it directly comes from the farms.Though it is for the common public a sizable number of  small shop owners are doing brisk purchase of  vegatables.

Though successive ADMK goverment not give much support to this scheme it runs successfully because of the people support. It will really create an impact in the rural economy. If farmers get good prices it will lure many more and it will revolunise the overall agri bussiness.
